Good Choices for Your First Freshwater Tank PDF Print E-mail
To start a fresh water fish tank is both fun and challenging. But if you don’t know which fish to store, then the whole exercise can turn into a depressive one. There are some fishes which are difficult to maintain. Yet there are plenty of fresh water fish available which are cheap and easy to maintain.  Find the fish which can help you start off with the program and this task is easy.

Guppies make a good choice, if you are starting with fishes for the first time. They are readily available in feeder fish tanks and you can pick up six to ten fish for just about a dollar. These look a little boring till they grow up. But raising the fish gives you the experience you need.

Some variety of feeder guppies grow into beautiful adults. Of course adult guppies are also available if you feel impatient to watch them grow. They are very friendly and can live in harmony with other fish easy to feed and take care of, guppies are hardy fish which reproduce also very fast.

If guppies bore you, you could try to keep tetras. They do well when there is a small school of fish. These types of fish are small-built and not very colorful to look at. The scene is different when they flock together. They behave very happily in groups of six or more. They are mild-natured and love to live with others in the community.

If you care for bigger types – choose gouramis. Sine some males act aggressively towards other males, it is a good idea to keep in pairs. This type is easy for maintenance and hardly show abrasive behavior towards other species.

Loaches are another type which get along well with other fish with the exception of the yoyo loach. Loaches love to roam around with their own species during the day. So remember to add a rock or pipe for loaches to hide and play.

Another type of fish which is easy for upkeep are the barbs. But you should not keep barbs if your aquarium has long-finned fish like guppies or angel fish, since barbs have a tendency to shred fins. They love to be in big groups – so keep at least six of them in the tank.

Angel fish is very popular and every one wants to keep them in their tank. But these can be a little dangerous as they are very aggressive in their behavior and may eat smaller fish like tetras. On the other hand one needs to be careful not to keep fish large enough to attack the angel fish and chop off their fins. If you are very keen to keep angel fish, the best bet would be to keep them separately – as they are happy in a group of two or four.
